What is an FMS? What are its components?
Answer: A Flexible
Manufacturing System (FMS) is a highly automated group technology
machine cell, consisting of a group of processing workstations (usually CNC
machine tools), interconnected by an automated material handling and storage
system and controlled by a distributed computer system.
The reason, the FMS is called flexible is that it is capable
of processing a variety of different part styles simultaneously at the various
workstations.
The FMS is most suitable for mid-variety, medium volume
production range.
FMS Components:
There are several basic components of an FMS –
·
Work stations
·
Material handling and storage system
·
Computer controlled system
·
People (required to manage and operate the
system)
The FMS is capable of producing a wide range of lot sizes.
The reason behind is that, it is technologically more sophisticated for human
resources who must make it work.
